Beyond Gym Flooring: Creating Safer Sensory, Calm & Therapy Spaces for a MINDS School
At GymFlooring.sg, our work increasingly extends beyond conventional gym flooring.
One of our latest specialised projects involves the supply and installation of safety flooring and wall padding systems for a MINDS school in Singapore, covering multiple purpose-built spaces including calm rooms, sensory rooms, play rooms and occupational therapy rooms.
While each room serves a different purpose, they share a common requirement: the surrounding surfaces need to be safer, more forgiving and suitable for frequent interaction, movement and activity.
This requires more than simply installing a soft floor.
It involves considering the floor, walls, corners, transitions, termination points and existing site conditions as one integrated safety system.

Sensory rooms, calm rooms and occupational therapy environments have very different requirements from a conventional classroom or fitness facility.
Users may sit, crawl, roll, balance, play or participate in movement-based activities close to the floor and surrounding walls. Occupational therapy environments can also incorporate activities intended to develop movement, coordination and sensory processing.
The objective of the surface system is therefore to create a more cushioned environment while maintaining the durability required for repeated institutional use.

Occupational Therapy Rooms
Therapy environments may involve movement, balance, motor activities and specialised equipment. The flooring therefore needs to provide cushioning and impact absorption while remaining stable and practical for regular use.
A Complete Floor-to-Wall Safety System
One of the important considerations for specialised rooms is continuity.
Installing a cushioned floor while leaving surrounding walls, exposed edges or awkward termination points untreated may leave hard surfaces within an otherwise protected area.
Our approach considers the room as a complete environment.

Custom Fitting Matters
Rooms are rarely perfectly uniform.
Doors, columns, corners, wall returns, built-in structures and changes in floor level all affect how a padded system needs to be installed.
For specialised school and therapy environments, much of the quality is therefore found in the details that are less obvious in photographs.
Panels and flooring have to be accurately measured, cut and fitted around the actual room configuration. Open edges need to terminate cleanly, corners require careful treatment, and transitions between padded and conventional surfaces need to be considered.
This is why our process starts with site assessment and measurement, followed by fabrication and installation based on the actual conditions of each room.
Choosing the Right Thickness and Construction
There is no single flooring thickness that is suitable for every sensory or therapy space.
The appropriate specification depends on factors such as:
Type of activity – A calm room may have different impact requirements from an active play or occupational therapy space.
Expected impact – Areas involving more dynamic movement generally benefit from greater cushioning and impact absorption.
Subfloor condition – Concrete, raised flooring and other substrates can behave differently beneath a cushioning system.
Required finished floor height – Increasing thickness affects doors, adjoining flooring and transition points.
Wall construction – The substrate and intended use influence the appropriate wall padding and fixing method.
Maintenance requirements – Schools and institutional facilities require surfaces that can withstand frequent use and practical day-to-day cleaning.
Rather than selecting a product based purely on thickness, we look at the intended function of the room and build the system around it.
Impact Protection Without Compromising the Finished Space
Safety padding does not have to make a room look temporary or overly industrial.
For permanent installations, the aim is to integrate the protective surfaces into the architecture of the room.
Accurate panel alignment, consistent joints, fitted corners and properly finished termination points help the system appear intentional and permanent.
This is particularly important for schools, therapy centres, occupational therapy facilities, sensory rooms and other institutional environments, where the installation may remain in daily use for many years.

Our experience with commercial gym flooring gives us a strong foundation for these applications.
